From traditional craftsmanship to contemporary designs, the beauty of material art captivates us through its textures, colours, and patterns. The MFGD team have been obsessed with fabric and materials since we began making things in primary school.

Let's explore the rich history and undeniable charm of material art, focusing on two types of fabric: Tenugui and Tea Towel prints.

Origin and Significance

Tenugui is a traditional Japanese cotton cloth with a remarkable history stretching back centuries. Originally, they were used in the Edo period as a multipurpose tool, from daily chores to ceremonial rituals. However, its versatility soon caught the eye of artisans, who began infusing it with intricate designs and vibrant colours.

Tenugui is known for its playful, distinctive prints and patterns, which often reference elements in nature.

Artistic Expression

Tenugui embodies the Japanese aesthetic philosophy, combining simplicity, elegance, and nature-inspired motifs. Traditional dyeing techniques, such as the 'chusen' method, require intricate stencilling and hand painting to create mesmerizing patterns. From delicate cherry blossoms to graceful waves, each Tenugui design tells a story and evokes a sense of harmony.

Versatility and Modern Adaptation

Beyond its historical roots, Tenugui has evolved by embracing contemporary trends while preserving its traditional essence. Its versatility has inspired artists and designers worldwide to experiment with the medium, resulting in collaborations with fashion brands, interior designers, and even as a canvas for artistic expression in modern exhibitions.

These prints create a sense of connection, allowing people to appreciate and celebrate different cultures in their homes. Embracing Sustainability

In an era where sustainability and conscious consumption are on the rise, tea towel prints offer an environmentally friendly alternative to mass-produced items. These fabric prints allow people to support local artisans, preserve traditional techniques and reduce their environmental footprint as they are often made from natural fibres and dyes, promoting sustainability and a connection to nature.

“Whether used for practical purposes or displayed as works of art, tenugui and tea towel art add beauty and character to any space.”
